The UK government has launched a new review of the radio and audio sector, aimed at ensuring the industry can “thrive long into the future” as listening continues to shift to digital and online platforms.
DCMS said 74.6% of all UK radio listening is now via digital platforms, based on the latest RAJAR figures published on 5 February 2026, and the review will assess how distribution and access should evolve into the 2030s and early 2040s.
Key areas include whether there should be a managed transition away from FM in the 2030s, how any future decision on Digital Terrestrial TV could affect radio distribution, and the role of emerging technologies such as AI — including potential benefits like more personalised experiences and support for fact-checking. The review is expected to conclude in autumn 2026 and feed into the BBC Charter Review process.
The announcement follows Ofcom’s latest Community Radio Fund round, with more than £1 million (€1.15 million) awarded to 47 community stations across the UK.
