Telenor Group is replacing its legacy video streaming infrastructure across three Nordic markets after selecting Scalstrm AB to deliver a next-generation platform for live TV and VOD.
Telenor Nordics explained it chose Scalstrm in late 2024, deploying Scalstrm Origin and Packaging in the cloud to support TV services for more than 1 million subscribers across Finland, Norway and Sweden.
The platform is intended to underpin a suite of features including live TV, start-over, catch-up, network PVR and video on demand. Telenor said the implementation is progressing, with archive migration under way and the first 3 live TV channels already deployed to customers in Finland via its operation DNA.
“Scalstrm Origin brings the agility, performance, and efficiency that our streaming operations need for the future. This is a strategic leap forward, providing future-proof infrastructure to deliver world-class streaming experiences to our customers across the Nordics”, said Emil Hansen, VP Head of Nordic TV in Telenor.
Scalstrm said Origin introduces a flexible cloud deployment model built around Infrastructure as Code, designed to speed deployment and improve resource efficiency. As a next step, Telenor plans to introduce Just-In-Time transcoding to enable dynamic packaging on demand, with the aim of reducing storage requirements and optimising compute costs while maintaining streaming quality.
“Partnering with Telenor on this multi-country transformation is a strong validation of Scalstrm Origin as a next-generation streaming platform. By replacing legacy infrastructure with a flexible, cloud-native Origin and Packaging solution, Telenor is setting a new benchmark for scalable, efficient, and high-performance TV services in the Nordics. We are proud to support Telenor as they future-proof their streaming operations and deliver consistently high-quality experiences to over one million subscribers,” said Patrik Alm, Founder and CEO of Scalstrm.
Telenor said the customer proposition will continue to integrate major premium services including Viaplay, HBO Max and SkyShowtime, alongside live sports rights covering Premier League football, NHL and Formula 1, as well as Nordic originals and local programming.
