The Service List Registry has appointed former Everyone TV technology strategy chief James Jackson to its advisory board.
Jackson will support the definition and delivery of SLR’s Unified Service Platform, which aims to enable online television and video viewing on any screen.
SLR operates a global online platform for the discovery and selection of audiovisual services. Based on open standards including DVB-I, it provides an online catalogue of registered services and allows compatible devices and displays to discover them.
Jackson was previously Director of Technology Strategy at Everyone TV, the operator of Freeview, Freesat and Freely in the UK, overseeing enterprise technical architecture, technology programme management and governance across all three platforms. Before that he held a series of senior roles at the BBC, including Head of Distribution Strategy, with responsibility for the commercial and technical management of broadcast television and radio.
He said many of the technologies used to deliver UK broadcast and hybrid TV services have since fed into DVB and HbbTV specifications, but argued there remains a need to standardise and implement best-practice approaches that can be reused across territories to deliver scale.
Service List Registry founder and chief executive Dr William Cooper said Jackson brings “a wealth of practical and operational expertise” in supporting millions of viewers, and offers a broadcaster perspective on the shift to online distribution.
Jackson joins an advisory group that already includes former DVB Project chair Peter MacAvock and Matthew Huntington, secretary to its Steering Board. SLR has built a cloud-based global platform and is working with CE manufacturers, media service providers and regulators to move from pilots to large-scale deployments.
