Telecom Liechtenstein is upgrading its nationwide fibre network to offer residential and business customers broadband speeds of up to 25 Gbit/s, positioning the principality among the world’s fastest fixed broadband markets.
The operator has upgraded its existing fibre infrastructure with Nokia’s 25G-PON technology, enabling symmetrical bandwidth of up to 25 Gbit/s per connection. Telecom Liechtenstein says the new capacity is designed to support data-heavy use cases such as AI-based services, cloud workloads, connected industrial processes and high-resolution real-time video and communications.
From 9 December, every household and business in Liechtenstein will be able to access the higher speeds by migrating to the corresponding FL1 product. The company describes the move as the next development step from a gigabit-capable nationwide footprint to an ultra-high-speed broadband infrastructure that is “unique worldwide in terms of density and performance”.
“With this step, we are elevating Liechtenstein’s telecommunications infrastructure to a new level and creating a clear competitive advantage for both the economy and the population. After accounting for technical overhead, customers still have around 18 Gbit/s available for unrestricted use,” said CEO Aldo Frick.
The fixed network upgrade is part of a broader investment programme at Telecom Liechtenstein, which also includes the rollout of a new mobile core and a phased enhancement of the operator’s mobile network.
