UEFA renewals: Who has the rights?

November 21, 2025 13.14 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Paramount+’s move for UK Champions League rights from 2027 comes as part of a wider reset of UEFA club competition distribution across Europe, with key broadcasters in France, Spain and Italy also locking in long-term deals.

In France, Canal+ has renewed its exclusive rights to 100% of UEFA club competitions – the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League – for a further four seasons from 2027/28 to 2030/31. The extension cements Canal+ as the sole pay-TV home of European club football in the French market until 2031.

In Spain, Telefónica has secured a new four-season agreement reported at €1.46 billion a year, retaining rights to all UEFA club competitions on Movistar Plus+ from 2027 through 2031. The package covers the Champions League, Europa League, Conference League, Super Cup and Youth League, reinforcing Movistar’s position as the primary destination for European football in Spain.

Italy will see continuity in a shared model. Sky Italia remains the main pay-TV broadcaster of the Champions League, having already extended its deal through to 2027, while Amazon Prime Video continues to hold an 18-match “first-pick” package on Wednesday nights for the 2024–27 cycle, featuring the top game each round.

The biggest structural shift comes in the UK and Germany, where Paramount+ is emerging as a new heavyweight, having not yet covered any sports in the UK market. The streamer has won the bulk of Champions League rights from 2027–31, with Amazon Prime Video retaining a separate first-pick Tuesday package, while Sky Sports takes over all Europa League and Conference League matches.

In Germany, Paramount+ is also understood to have secured a substantial Champions League package from 2027 under UEFA’s new multi-market tender, sitting alongside Amazon’s retained “top match” rights in major territories.

The new UC3/Relevent tender launched in October 2025 initially covers only the “big five” markets (UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, France). Eastern European territories – including Poland and the Czech Republic – will follow in later waves.
