Finland’s public broadcaster Yle has trialled a private 5G network for studio production, running a wireless camera over 5G alongside traditional workflows to test low-latency video, mobility and operational efficiency.
The pilot, built by tower and network operator Digita using Nokia technology, was deployed on the set of Yle’s music entertainment show Elämäni Biisi. Live camera feeds were carried wirelessly over the dedicated 5G network for monitoring and recording to assess image consistency and production agility.
Yle said the trial met its objectives, noting growing reliance on broadband networks for live contribution. “Wireless solutions bring freedom and flexibility to programme production. With 5G, we can transmit high-quality video, which is critical for live broadcasts,” said Olli Sipilä, Head of Distribution Technology at Yle.
Digita described private 5G as offering stable, low-latency connectivity suitable for demanding media environments, while Nokia said the collaboration underscores the maturity of 5G for real-time production. The partners will continue to explore where dedicated 5G delivers the greatest benefits and how usage could be expanded.
