iWedia powers NTT DOCOMO’s fourth-gen Android TV box for Hikari TV

October 23, 2025 13.28 Europe/London By Julian Clover

iWedia has delivered the software stack for NTT DOCOMO’s fourth-generation Android TV set-top, launched to serve Japan’s broadcast and IPTV market via the Hikari TV service.

The new Ultra HD 4K device combines ARIB-compliant broadcast reception with OTT streaming in a single platform, using iWedia’s customised middleware and end-to-end integration. Features include advanced PVR with auto-chaptering and smart recording, BML interactive services, and a unified Hikari TV app integrated with CAS and BML modules.

Built on Synaptics hardware, the box runs Android TV 12 with an upgrade path to 14 and HEVC support. iWedia says it provided certification support to meet Google requirements alongside terrestrial and satellite broadcast standards in Japan.

“Our role was to align global technology with local market needs,” said iWedia CEO Hans-Juergen Desor. “By blending our Android TV expertise with deep knowledge of Japanese standards, we helped NTT DOCOMO bring a truly next-gen TV experience and increase value to their viewers.”
