České Radiokomunikace (CRA) has launched the third phase of its 5G Broadcast trials in Prague, aiming to validate reception on commercially available smartphones and tablets .
The year-long tests transmit from the Prague City-Žižkov Television Tower at the same power as DVB-T2. Objectives include checking network settings and parameters, coverage, handset compatibility, integration of 5G Broadcast with data networks, and interoperability with mobile 5G in the 700MHz band.
CRA says handset readiness has progressed, citing the Motorola Razr 50 Ultra and Edge 50 Ultra as supporting 5G Broadcast reception after a software update.
“Broadcasting using 5G Broadcast technology appears to be very promising,” said CRA CEO Miloš Mastník, highlighting spectrum efficiency, lower electricity consumption and service resilience in crisis situations. “Broadcasting in 5G can bring viewers their favourite programmes to mobile phones or tablets without having to use mobile data, it is also more economical and environmentally friendly than existing technologies,” he added.
Similar 5G Broadcast pilots are underway in France, Germany, Italy, Belgium and Poland. CRA’s latest phase is intended to feed into future decisions on service models and potential commercial rollout.
