Universal Electronics Inc. (UEI) has unveiled the Babylon Green remote control, developed in partnership with Sunrise and Liberty Global, positioning it as a new benchmark for sustainability in consumer devices.
The remote is built from recycled plastics, shipped in fully recyclable packaging, and powered by UEI’s UE961 chipset, which has been designed specifically for remote control applications. The chipset enables ultra-low power consumption, delivering a battery life of more than five years in typical use. For many subscribers, that will mean no battery replacement for the duration of their service contract.
“Babylon Green is the result of smart engineering and a shared commitment to sustainability,” said Chris van der Linden, Director of Entertainment Platforms at Liberty Global. “Our goal was to create a remote that didn’t just perform brilliantly but did so with minimal environmental impact.”
Kuldip Singh Johal, SVP Global Business Development & Sales at UEI, added:
“With Babylon Green, we are demonstrating that sustainability and innovation can go hand in hand. Our UE961 chipset reduces power consumption without compromising functionality, helping our partners Sunrise and Liberty Global offer their customers a better, greener experience.”
UEI says the reduction in power use is expected to save millions of batteries over the lifecycle of the remote, cutting environmental waste and carbon emissions while enhancing ease of use for consumers.
