Netflix is to cover the Opening Day game between the New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants next year as part of a new three-year contract that begins with the 2026 season.
The primetime match will be the only game taking place on that day with the remainder of the fixture list being played 23 hours later.
The news was first reported by sports journal The Athletic, which added that Netflix will also have the Home Run Derby and is expected to share a handful of special location event regular-season games with NBC/Peacock, including Field of Dreams, MLB at Rickwood Field and the new MLB Speedway game.
The involvement of Netflix – which continues to enter the sports arena – is part of a series of three-year deals expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
Negotiations began in February when ESPN opted out of the final three years of its $550 million deal. MLB divided up ESPN’s old package of Sunday Night Baseball, the Home Run Derby and the playoffs to Netflix and NBC/Peacock. There remains an agreement with Netflix for out of market games.
NBC/Peacock will be the new home of Sunday Night Baseball and the first round of the playoffs.
