German sports network Sportdigital has secured the broadcast rights to the Barclays Women’s Super League (WSL), expanding its football line-up with what is widely regarded as the strongest women’s league in the world.
Coverage kicks off on Saturday, 27 September, with Arsenal facing Aston Villa live on pay-TV channel Sportdigital1+ from 12:55 CEST. The channel will show at least three matches from each round, including Liverpool vs Manchester United (Sunday, 12:55) and West Ham United vs Chelsea (Sunday, 15:25). Matches will also be available with German-language commentary.
The WSL features leading clubs such as Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United, attracting international stars and large crowds. Among the familiar names for German fans are Sydney Lohmann, who recently moved from Bayern Munich to Manchester City, national teammate Rebecca Knaak, and Chelsea’s Sjoeke Nüsken. Other top players include Chelsea striker Sam Kerr, Arsenal forward Alessia Russo and England international Chloe Kelly.
Alongside the WSL, Sportdigital has also acquired rights to the Barclays Women’s Super League 2 (second division) and the Women’s League Cup.
“The recent European Championship in Switzerland has once again underlined the importance and quality that women’s football has achieved. We are therefore delighted to be able to broadcast the best women’s league on Sportdigital and to attract new fans and audiences for the women’s game,” said Gisbert Wundram, managing director of Sportdigital.
