NPO says four channels will be discontinued and 80 jobs will be lost as part of its 2026 budget plans.
The Dutch public broadcaster says that international channel BVN will close as will radio stations NPO Campus Radio, NPO Soul & Jazz, and NPO 2 Extra.
“We are making these decisions with a heavy heart,” said NPO chairman Lucien Brouwer. “We realise this will impact our staff, creators, and audiences. Nevertheless, we must take responsibility, and this is the next step toward a future-proof system.”
Brouwer says public broadcasting is facing several significant changes and the NPO is working towards a new system in which broadcasters are clustered into “broadcasting houses”.
The request to terminate the channels has been submitted to the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, which will make the final decision on the channels’ future.
