Talks between DAZN and Proximus have resumed as political pressure begins to be exerted in the Belgian football row.
Since the start of the new season DAZN has been the exclusive rights holder after signing an €84 million agreement with Belgian Pro League to distribute matches between 2025 and 2030. However, Belgium’s TV platforms have to date been cut out of the deal.
Georges-Louis Bouchez has emerged as a potential peacebroker. The Belgian politician is also chairman of Pro League football club Royal Francs Borains.
According to De Tijd DAZN has made concessions. The rights holder is reportedly willing to earn less than originally hoped, perhaps prompted by the disappointing figures from its own subscriptions.
Local media reports that Proximus is willing to broadcast not only the Pro League, but also to redistribute DAZN’s wider offer.
It’s anticipated that once the telco agrees a deal, the other platforms would be likely to follow suit, most likely on similar terms.
Meanwhile, DAZN and RTBF have signed an agreement until mid-2030. It means the Walloon public broadcaster will now be able to run a Sunday evening highlights programme. Several commentators/analysts under contract with RTBF will also be allowed to appear on DAZN.
