Nagravision and MediaTek partner for next-gen DRM

September 12, 2025 08.01 Europe/London By Robert Briel

Nagravision and MediaTek have announced a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing digital rights management (DRM) for streaming content.

The collaboration introduces a renewable, hardware-based security solution designed to address evolving threats and support scalable content protection.

The joint initiative focuses on delivering on-device DRM that moves beyond traditional factory-level credential management. By integrating a hardware root-of-trust and key ladder architecture, the solution reduces dependence on Trusted Execution Environments (TEE), which can vary across devices and may weaken over time.

As piracy continues to challenge content providers, the new approach offers a more adaptable and resilient security framework. Sam Lee, Deputy General Manager of MediaTek’s Smart Home Business Unit, noted, “Pirates are constantly probing for weaknesses at the DRM level. Our partnership with NAGRAVISION enables a renewable, resilient security model that adapts to evolving threats and protects content long after a device has left the factory.”

Nagravision’s secure in-field provisioning allows credentials to be updated dynamically, helping service providers respond quickly to potential compromises. This capability supports broadcast-grade security on consumer devices powered by MediaTek chipsets, enabling secure delivery of high-value content such as live sports.

Stéphane Le Dreau, SVP of Product Management and Sales Development at Nagravision, emphasized the importance of robust device-level protection: “On-device security is becoming a key differentiator for service providers aiming to deliver high-quality content.”

The solution is designed to align with premium licensing requirements and long-term content investment strategies. Devices equipped with this enhanced DRM are positioned to meet industry expectations for secure streaming and maintain consistent protection across diverse platforms.
