The German market for pay-TV and paid online video grew by 6% in 2024 to around €5.5 billion, according to new figures published by industry association VAUNET. The report forecasts further growth of 5% this year, pushing revenues to €5.8 billion.
VAUNET’s study Pay-TV & Paid-VoD in Germany 2024/2025, presented in Berlin today, highlights that demand for subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) and pay-TV services continues to rise despite a challenging economic and regulatory environment.
The number of pay-TV subscriptions increased to 15.2 million last year, up from 14.8 million in 2023, with a further rise to 15.6 million expected in 2025. AGF-listed pay-TV channels reached an average monthly audience of 18.8 million viewers in 2024. SVOD subscriptions grew to 22.1 million last year and are projected to reach 23.2 million in 2025.
VAUNET managing director Frank Giersberg welcomed the market’s resilience, but warned of intensifying competition and an uneven playing field against global contenders. “The market is developing positively and offers users an impressive variety of content,” he said. “But the competitive pressure is increasing, and unfair competition from Big Tech remains one of the biggest challenges.”
