The Forum Audiovisuel Numérique (FAVN) is organising a DVB-I specification trial in France.
The project involves broadcasters, operators, and receiver manufacturers who will evaluate the capabilities of DVB-I for enhancing television services and contributing to future TV development in France.
DVB-I offers a standard framework for service discovery across broadcast and broadband networks. It enables unified service listings that integrate digital terrestrial television, satellite, and IP-based streams with the aim of simplifying navigation between services.
The French trial will assess various scenarios, including identifying general interest services. presenting these services to users and facilitating transitions between linear streams and broadcaster applications.
General interest services are considered an important aspect of European audiovisual policy. Under the EU Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD), Member States may adopt measures to support the visibility and accessibility of such services, acknowledging their social, cultural, and democratic roles. DVB-I provides a standards-driven method for meeting these requirements within a combined broadcast–broadband setting.
This initiative in France adds to ongoing DVB-I projects and trials elsewhere in Europe and internationally, such as those in Germany, Italy, Ireland, and Eutelsat’s Sat.tv service.
DVB-I will be in evidence at IBC2025 in Amsterdam this week (12-15 September). At the DVB booth, scheduled sessions include meetings and presentations focused on DVB-I, along with opportunities to ask questions to specialists during DVB-I: Ask an Expert segments.
