Harmonic has revealed a central management system for its hybrid streaming solution designed to facilitate workflow operations across both cloud and on-premises environments.
The management system within Harmonic’s hybrid streaming framework enables operators to deploy and configure video workflows in various settings, aiming to enhance the operational efficiencies associated with hybrid streaming architectures.
According to Eric Gallier, vice president of video customer solutions at Harmonic, hybrid streaming is increasingly used to reduce the total cost of ownership for streaming platforms and can utilise public cloud resources during periods of peak demand, such as live sports events. The central management system enables operators to manage streaming services regardless of deployment location, whether on-premises, in the cloud, or in combined environments.
Key features of the central management system include unified control of on-premises and cloud infrastructures: A single user interface allows operators to create, configure, and monitor linear channels on the streaming platform, with options to operate channels on-premises, in the cloud, or both.
The hybrid streaming solution from Harmonic manages storage and egress costs by keeping recent or high-demand VOD, nPVR, and live-to-VOD assets on-premises while migrating less frequently accessed content to the cloud. The central management system automates this migration based on preset rules related to content freshness and popularity. Migration processes remain transparent to the content management system (CMS).
Additionally, the system supports operational resilience and disaster recovery by allowing service providers to use cloud resources for redundancy, geographic diversity, and failover, which can back up on-premises infrastructure if needed.
Harmonic’s hybrid streaming solution is designed to support multiple video applications, including linear channel and VOD streaming, time-shifted viewing, catch-up TV, network PVR, and server-side ad insertion.
