Sunrise and Media Distillery introduce AI-powered TV highlights

September 4, 2025 10.36 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

Swiss network operator Sunrise has launched a new ‘TV Highlights’ feature designed to make it easier for its one million TV customers to discover programmes.

The company has deployed the Preview Distillery solution from Amsterdam-based video analysis solutions provider Media Distillery, which uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to generate short preview clips from live broadcasts.

The feature went live in early September 2025 and automatically generates 15–20 second clips from live TV across Sunrise’s 50 most-watched channels, creating around 100 highlights per day. The system uses generative AI technology and machine learning to identify key scenes, producing near real-time previews for linear, catch-up and replay viewing.

For users, the clips are embedded throughout the Sunrise TV app’s interface: in the top ‘A-Spot’ carousel, in a dedicated highlights rail, and in personalised feeds that adapt to each subscriber’s viewing behaviour. The operator believes this will shorten decision-making time and boost overall engagement.

“Our customers have so much interesting content to choose from in our TV service, but we know that some viewers can find it difficult to decide what to watch. Our research shows that if we present short highlights to the users, it helps them decide faster, and as such, it increases engagement,” said Christoph Richartz, Chief Consumer Officer Main Brand at Sunrise.

“Despite the power and beauty of our discovery and recommendation engines, which provide personalised suggestions, offering these TV highlights delivers another important piece in facilitating content discovery. We’re a multilingual country: We are extremely proud of our capability to provide services in all the main languages that our customers speak. We believe that providing TV highlights, created specifically to help all our customers find more of the content they love, differentiates Sunrise in the marketplace,” he added.

Sunrise’s TV services run on the Horizon platform operated by its parent company Liberty Global. “The collaboration between Liberty Global and Media Distillery on the development of the Sunrise TV app marks a significant leap in how customers experience television. We’re excited to introduce innovative features like personalised TV highlights to Sunrise users – helping them discover and enjoy the content they love more easily than ever. With the support of Media Distillery’s advanced AI technology, we can deliver accurate and engaging TV highlight clips that transform content discovery,” said Chris van der Linden, Director Entertainment Platforms at Liberty Global.

Roland Sars, Co-Founder and CEO of Media Distillery, commented: “We are honoured to have again been entrusted by Sunrise to help its customers reap extra enjoyment from their TV service. By launching TV highlights powered by Preview Distillery, Sunrise is exemplifying how technology can be harnessed to meaningfully improve TV entertainment experiences.”
