Hisense has announced it will become the first TV brand to adopt Dolby Vision 2 in its line-up of premium televisions. The new picture quality innovation has been announced by Dolby Industries as the successor to its ten-year-old Dolby Vision.
French media and entertainment company Canal+ has also announced its commitment to the technology.
“We’ve reached an inflection point where TV technology has dramatically changed while artists continue to demand even more innovative tools,” said John Couling, Senior Vice President, Entertainment at Dolby Laboratories. “Dolby Vision 2 redefines how we think of Dolby Vision to unleash the full capabilities of modern TVs while giving artists unprecedented opportunities to push their creative boundaries further than ever before.”
Dolby Vision 2 operates with an enhanced image engine designed for superior performance. Content Intelligence introduces advanced tools to seamlessly connect creative production with viewers’ home environments. This system enables automatic and authentic optimization of display quality, adapting picture settings based on both the content and viewing context. Utilising AI technology, Dolby Vision 2 intelligently calibrates presentations for optimal device and environmental compatibility.
Key features of Content Intelligence include:
• Precision Black addresses concerns about dark imagery by providing enhanced clarity in any viewing environment while maintaining artistic integrity.
• Light Sense improves picture quality through sophisticated ambient light detection and reference lighting data from content sources, optimizing displays for ideal conditions.
• Sports and Gaming Optimization brings targeted adjustments such as white point calibration and motion control, meeting the specific requirements of live sports and gaming.
Building on Content Intelligence, Dolby Vision 2 offers advanced tone-mapping capabilities that capitalize on the increased brightness and colour range of modern televisions. Bi-directional tone mapping empowers creators with enhanced controls to utilise improved display technologies. This advancement allows high-performance televisions to deliver greater brightness, refined contrast, and vibrant colours, while consistently preserving the creator’s intended vision.
Hisense will be the first TV brand to introduce Dolby Vision 2 to its lineup. These TVs will be powered by MediaTek Pentonic 800 with MiraVision Pro PQ Engine, the first silicon chip to integrate Dolby Vision 2.
“This represents exactly the kind of innovation Hisense customers expect from premium television experiences,” said Sonny Ming, GM of Hisense TV Product Marketing. “Dolby Vision 2 jointly with Hisense RGB-MiniLED Technology, can not only deliver dramatically astonishing picture, but also increase the potential of TVs with ultra-wide colour and ultra-high brightness, which haven’t been possible until today.”
Timing and availability of the product will be announced by Hisense at a later date.
Joining Hisense, Canal+ is the first media and entertainment group to commit to producing content in Dolby Vision 2.
“This partnership with Dolby reflects Canal+’s pioneering spirit of innovation. Our commitment to delivering an unparalleled viewing experience to our subscribers remains unwavering. With the launch of Dolby Vision 2 – across movies, series, and live sports- that experience reaches breathtaking new heights,” said Stéphane Baumier, Chief Technology Officer of Canal+.
