V-Nova has introduced two licensing programs for MPEG-5 LCEVC, the standardised video enhancement technology that boosts compression efficiency and processing performance across codecs.
The announcement, made ahead of SET Expo in Brazil, supports LCEVC adoption in ATSC 3.0 and TV 3.0, and includes flexible terms for streaming services and device manufacturers.
Guido Meardi, CEO & Co-Founder, emphasised V-Nova’s commitment to affordable, high-quality video across formats. “After joining the Access Advance HEVC pool, we are reinforcing our commitment to the industry by announcing the MPEG-5 LCEVC licensing program… Our goal is to deliver better video at lower cost, across broadcast, streaming, and emerging immersive formats, while aligning with customer demand for clear, simple and fair pricing of codec technologies.”
V-Nova has put forward a plan for video distributors, with royalties based on user numbers (waived for free-to-air broadcasters), plus early sign-up benefits such as a discounted $8 million annual cap. There is also a plan for device makers, starting at $0.20 per unit, including open-access discounts for enabling LCEVC across all codecs and systems.
MPEG-5 LCEVC reduces transcoding costs and energy use by up to 70% and enhances compression efficiency by up to 40%. The technology adds an enhancement layer to any base video, enabling high-efficiency UHD/HD delivery and low-latency streaming with minimal hardware requirements.
