The Rest Is Football to create video edition centred on LaLiga

August 7, 2025 12.22 Europe/London By Julian Clover

The Rest is Football has become the first podcast to secure official rights to weekly clips from a major European football league.

Produced by Gary Lineker’s Goalhanger, The Rest Is Football: LaLiga is a video-first edition of the hit podcast.

Lineker, who recently left the BBC’s long-running sports show Match of the Day, has also been hired by ITV as presenter of new Saturday night gameshow The Box. The former Spurs and England star played for Barcelona in the late 1980s. He will co-host the podcast with presenter Alex Aljoe.

Available on Spotify and YouTube for audiences in the UK and Ireland, with audio released globally, each episode will feature clips from every LaLiga match, alongside expert analysis and discussion.

“Podcasting is no longer just an audio medium – video is transforming how people engage with our content and bringing in entirely new audiences. We’re increasingly seeing fans watch the show on Spotify or stream it to their TVs via YouTube,” explains Tony Pastor, Co-Founder of Goalhanger. “We first saw the impact of that shift during the last Men’s Euros – of the 19.6 million downloads and streams that month, more than half came from YouTube. Since then, we’ve added video to our Spotify feed and seen consumption explode.”

The partnership brings fans access to action from clubs including FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid and Athletic Club.

Previously, The Rest Is Football partnered with DAZN for coverage from FIFA Club World Cup. The partnership delivered significant reach, with tournament-period episodes generating over 4.7 million streams and downloads. Social content added more than 4.5 million views and 58,000 engagements across platforms.
