TF1 has begun legal action against Canal+ over the platform’s low-cost TV offer.
Canal launched TV+ in Spring 2024, offering subscribers access to around 80 different channels, at a cost of €2 a month. It was built around live and catchup channels, many of them already available terrestrially, but largely excluding its own content.
TV+ has eaten into rival Molotov, which has its own 100 channel offer at €6.99 a month.
TF1, which also runs networks TMC, TFX, TF1 Séries Films and LCI, says Canal is in breach of trademark rules. The action, instigated in May 2024, has now reached the French courts.
The commercial channel is claiming €6.5 million in compensation.
The action is a reversal of a previous dispute. Last year, Canal sued streaming platform TF1+ for infringement and exploitation, claiming to be the sole owner of the “+” trademark.
