Netflix has said that anime is now mainstream after revealing half of its subscribers are watching the genre.
The streamer recently previewed a new slate of content at Anime Expo 2025 in Los Angeles, which it hopes will add to the 1 billion times the format was viewed during 2024.
Like its other titles, Netflix releases it anime content simultaneously around the world, including dubbed audio and audio descriptions on up to 33 languages.
“Anime already boasts a passionate international fanbase, and we’re helping it reach even more people by offering a centralized home,” says Netflix. “Japanese content is the world’s second most-watched non-English content, with anime as a major driver.”
In the first half of this year alone, eight anime titles made the Netflix Global Top 10 (Non-English) List, including The Apothecary Diaries and My Happy Marriage. And 2024 marked a record-breaking year, with 33 anime titles appearing in the same list. This represents more than double the number of titles from 2021.
