Canal+ President Maxime Saada has said the platform will not carry the new LFP channel being established for the broadcast of Ligue 1 matches.
“If the LFP launches its television platform to broadcast Ligue 1, it will not be able to rely on Canal+ to be the support,” Saada said in an interview with French sports journal L’Équipe.
“Canal+ is throwing in the towel,” he said. “We have chosen to give up. To date, we consider that the conditions are not met for Canal+ to distribute the new Ligue 1 platform.”
Saada said the price the LFP wants to charge is simply too high, arguing that while Canal sells its European Cup pass for €10, the Ligue is looking for €20, without including all the available matches.
Following the arrival former M6 executive Nicolas de Tavernost as head of LFP Media, many observers had thought there would be a thawing of the tensions between Canal and its previous long-term partner, a continuation of this cold war seems likely.
