Films and Series continue to dominate Czech screens

May 7, 2025 15.02 Europe/London By Julian Clover

A significant proportion of Czech viewers favour local productions, according to channel distribution agency Atmedia.

The company’s latest research says the long-established audience preference for films and TV series extends to traditional television channels and streaming services.

According to official TV viewership data, they account for 44% of the total audience share among viewers aged 15 and over. TV series, in particular, enjoy even greater popularity. “This type of content is among the most sought-after across all age groups – among both men and women,” says Michaela Suráková, Atmedia’s Managing Director. This is further reflected in the composition of the Czech television market, where movie and series channels account for more than 40% of all measured thematic pay-TV channels. These include channels such as AXN, AXN Black, AXN White, CANAL+ Action, CS Film, FilmBox, FilmBox Stars, and JOJ Cinema.

Czech titles account for 42% of total viewing time, above content from North America and other European territories.

A similar pattern emerges on streaming platforms, where comedy, crime, action and adventure, family dramas, and sci-fi and fantasy titles rank among the most in-demand genres. “The popularity of individual genres varies across different streaming services. For example, sci-fi and fantasy content is most often sought out on global VOD platforms, while family films tend to be watched mainly on local services,’ explains Suráková, pointing to the results of the atmedia index survey for the second half of last year.

Significant differences are also evident in the choice of content origin. Users of local platforms such as Oneplay (former Voyo) and Prima+ most often watch Czech films and series – including original productions created by these services. Around half of their users prefer local titles. Conversely, users of global VOD platforms such as Netflix, Max, or Disney+ are primarily interested in the original content of these services and in international titles.

White Paper: Why Wi-Fi 7 is critical for ISPs in the gigabit+ era

Today, consumers are increasingly using bandwidth-intensive and latency-sensitive workloads, such as 4K and 8K streaming, online gaming, and AR/VR applications.
