Ligue 1 clubs in France are to pull out of their domestic television rights deal with DAZN.
The broadcaster has rejected a proposal from the Ligue after a breakdown in relations between the two sides.
The decision adds to the catalogue of uncertainty that has been building since the Spanish company Mediapro pulled out of a broadcast deal in 2020.
The agreement with DAZN was reached last August with DAZN paying an annual €400 million for a weekly 8 matches. BeIN Sports’ is paying €100 million for the broadcast of the 5pm Saturday game. The figure is down on the €624 million paid the previous season by Amazon and Canal Plus.
Officially, the contract is in place until 2029, but a break clause allows either party to terminate the contract at the end of next season.
DAZN believes the league has not done enough to promote the availability of its streaming service or to arrest the piracy that has left it with just 500,000 paying subscribers.
DAZN is now seeking €573 million from the clubs for not fulfilling their part of the agreement.
Previously a group of clubs pushed for the league to launch its own streaming service, before opting to go with Amazon.
