Deirdre Ní Choistín has taken up the position of director-general at the Irish broadcaster TG4.
She becomes the fourth director general of the Irish language station since its foundation in 1996, and the first woman to be appointed to the role.
She succeeds Alan Esslemont who has been Director General since 2016 and who stepped down this month after eight years.
Ní Choistín joined TG4 in 1999, shortly after the channel was rebranded from TnaG to TG4. She established MOLSCÉAL, a popular online news and entertainment platform for TG4’s core Irish speaking audience. And, prior to being appointed as Head of News and Current Affairs, she was TG4’s Communications Manager where she implemented an innovative new multi-platform communications strategy.
