ZDF transforms media library into streaming service

March 18, 2025 09.18 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

German public broadcaster ZDF has transformed its media library ZDFmediathek into a streaming portal.

With the move, ZDF is leaving the logic of the previous media library, which was structurally strongly based on the linear TV channel. Users and their individual interests and preferences are at the centre of the offering. In future, users will be guided intuitively through the programmes thanks to an improved navigation structure, according to the broadcaster, adding that automated and algorithmically generated page types ensure a clear and concise presentation of content. With the help of extensive additional metadata, content will be easier to access, better classified and clearly organised.

With the technical enhancements, combined with a contemporary design and user-friendly content presentation, ZDF aims to create an intuitive user experience for all target groups. Special attention was also paid to the possibility of barrier-free accessibility.

The ZDF streaming portal is available on all common end devices and optimised for smart TV use.

“With the launch of this service, ZDF is setting new standards for a modern, intuitive and inclusive streaming portal and, with its public service personalisation strategy, is providing a contemporary response to the increased demands of users. We are also laying the foundation for ‘Streaming OS’, our intensified collaboration with ARD,” said Florian Kumb, Head of the ZDF Audience Directorate.

Strategically, the launch builds on key innovations of recent years: The ‘One ZDF for all’ strategy has already significantly expanded the range of new content for non-linear use. Thanks to the cooperation in the ARD/ZDF streaming network, content from fellow public broadcaster ARD and other partners can also be accessed via the ZDF streaming portal. ZDF can also draw on extensive experience in automation and personalisation with solutions developed in-house, such as its own recommendation system.

In a next step, the ZDF streaming portal will be expanded to include discourse and participation options. ZDF is involved in this as one of the initiators of the international ‘Public Spaces Incubator’ project. The use of joint technologies with ARD regarding login and players is also being driven forward. Among other things, the aim is to create cross-platform public service user profiles.
