Synamedia’s Quortex Switch optimises CDN switching

March 18, 2025 13.25 Europe/London By Julian Clover

Synamedia says its new Quortex Switch simplifies the design of multi-CDN systems to dynamically route end-users to the best available content sources.

The product, debuting at The NAB Show 2025 in Las Vegas (April 5-9), is the latest addition to Synamedia’s award-winning Quortex portfolio.

Speaking during an online briefing, Julien Signes, EVP, Video Network, Synamedia said CDN was by far the largest variable cost in streaming operations.

Quortex Switch simplifies the design of multi-CDN systems to dynamically route end-users to the best available content sources. It eliminates the need for proprietary client-side code and enables seamless standards-based communication between the player and the content steering server, allowing for benefits such as mid-stream switching across multiple CDNs for uninterrupted viewing experiences.

“It’s not based on legacy DNS switching, which was kind of a hack used typically for CDN switching,” explained Signes. “It’s based on the new HLS formats and as well as DASH formats that essentially standardise the communication between the player and the CDN switcher or the other content steering platform.”

Quortex Switch also helps content providers reduce costs by using balancing decisions to manage CDN usage commitments and pricing differences.  This prevents payment for unused capacity and unnecessary fees.

“This is a real time management platform, so you can adjust it in real time, in the control panel, in the cloud and have an effect. You can add CDNs or remove CDNs that have reached their maximum capacity.”

Quortex Switch is available through the Quortex portal and can be integrated with Quortex SaaS products including Quortex Link and Quortex Play.
