France Médias Monde and Deutsche Welle condemn US decision to cut funding for international services

March 17, 2025 15.41 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

France Médias Monde (FMM) and Deutsche Welle (DW) have voiced deep concerns over the United States’ decision to halt funding for its international public media services.

The move, announced on 15 March 2025, could see vital outlets such as Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and Radio Free Asia severely impacted.

The decision, which includes the suspension of US Agency for Global Media (USAGM) employees, threatens to deprive millions around the world of a crucial source of balanced and verified information, according to the FMM and DW. The two European broadcasters warn that such a measure weakens global media freedom, particularly in countries where independent journalism is scarce or non-existent. They argue that cutting these services undermines a critical safeguard against disinformation and manipulation.

FMM and DW stress that this action is particularly troubling given the United States’ long-standing role as a defender of press freedom and professional journalism. In an era of increasing global polarisation, the need for independent and pluralistic journalism has never been greater. The abrupt nature of the decision has further raised concerns about its implications for press freedom and democracy.

FMM and DW reaffirm their commitment to their mission but recognise the broader risks posed by the potential loss of USAGM as a partner in the fight for democracy and free expression. They express solidarity with USAGM employees, many of whom now face an uncertain future and may be forced to return to their home countries.

This decision highlights the urgent need to defend the European model of independent public service media and ensure the long-term sustainability of international broadcasters, according to FMM and DW. They emphasise that robust funding mechanisms are essential to maintaining free and independent journalism on a global scale.
