The first trial of BT’s internet delivery solution, MAUD (Multicast-Assisted Unicast Delivery), has demonstrated MAUD’s ability to flatten peaks of network traffic, by switching to multicast delivery.
The trial used BBC Two content on EE’s set-top box TV platform in the live network. In peak times on the network, the MAUD solution was able to convert over 60% of traffic from unicast delivery to multicast delivery, a more efficient way of delivering content over the internet.
MAUD was launched in late 2003 to enhance live video streaming quality and reliability for viewers and increases content delivery efficiency for broadcasters and Content Delivery Networks (CDNs).
BT was working with content delivery network (CDN) Broadpeak and Qwilt, which provided its Open Edge technology into the trial.
BT Group now wants to broaden the scope of the trial to include more channels, build out the full feature set, as well as to test the addition of dynamic ad insertion, which would enable a seamless, personalised ad experience for viewers.
