They may be an alternative for cordcutters that have left cable behind, but the new world of online TV is not immune to an old-style carriage dispute.
Subscribers to YouTube TV in the United States were hours away from losing access to Paramount channels before the Google service announced it has secured a short term extension to the current contract.
“YouTube TV subscribers continue to have access to Paramount channels, including CBS, and any recordings that are in their Library,” Google said in a statement. Earlier it said it was working hard to reach a fair agreement that would allow subscribers to keep the channels without having to pass on any additional costs.
Unless a new deal is made subscribers would lose CBS, CBS Sports and add on channels including Paramount+ with SHOWTIME and BET+.
The new world means that recordings made in the cloud would also be lost because customers are unable to make their own local recordings as was the case with DVR technology.
