Sonos is looking to take on Apple TV with a high-end streaming player based around the Android platform.
The product has been in development for some time, but had been put on hold after the premium audio company was forced to divert attention to its mobile app after an ill-fated upgrade that became unusable for many users.
It would be the first time that Sonos has entered the video market with a price point of between $200 and $400, according to The Verge, which first reported the story.
Codenamed Pinewood, it would combine content from streaming services including Netflix, Max, and Disney Plus under a single, unified software experience. There would be a physical remote control while Sonos Voice Control will be integrated. It also serves as an HDMI switch and has several HDMI ports with passthrough functionality that would allow external devices such as gaming consoles or 4K Blu-ray players to be connected.
Through Pinewood, Sonos would also be able to take a greater control of the I/O stack by allowing it to wirelessly transmit lag-free TV audio to the company’s soundbars and other Sonos products.
