ProSiebenSat.1 expands Joyn with new TV rights deals

January 30, 2025 12.09 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

German broadcaster ProSiebenSat.1 is extending the content offering of its streaming platform Joyn through two major licensing deals with ARD Plus, WDR mediagroup, High View, and ZDF Studios.

As part of a new collaboration with ARD Plus, WDR mediagroup and High View, Joyn gains an extensive rights package that includes classic and iconic German TV series such as Die Lindenstraße, Dittsche and Großstadtrevier. Additionally, the deal brings a collection of Bud Spencer & Terence Hill films to the platform.

This marks the first time that some of these titles are being offered in such a comprehensive on-demand selection free of charge, according to ProSiebenSat.1. The new content will be accessible via both Joyn’s ad-supported video-on-demand (AVOD) model and through FAST Channels. Subscribers to Joyn PLUS+ will have the option to watch the programming ad-free.

“With the high-quality new content partnership with ARD Plus, WDR mediagroup and High View, we are further expanding the content portfolio of our streaming platform. This reaffirms Joyn’s clear promise to bundle the most diverse content for viewers free of charge in one place,” said Henrik Pabst, Chief Content Officer at ProSiebenSat.1.

In a separate licensing deal, Joyn has secured 2,730 hours of programming from ZDF Studios, enriching its catalogue with classic crime dramas, telenovelas and documentaries. The agreement includes content from channel brands such as KultKrimi, ZDF Telenovela, Herzfrequenz and Doku Über.

Part or the package are classic, popular series such as Küstenwache, Wege zum Glück, Derrick and Ein Fall für Zwei. Beyond scripted entertainment, the deal also includes documentary features, for example Im Reich der Tiefe and Frontlines – Kriegsschauplätze des Zweiten Weltkriegs, covering topics from nature to history.

The content will be available from Q1 2025 for free on Joyn and without advertising to subscribers of Joyn PLUS+.

“The premium content from ZDF Studios is a real enrichment for the portfolio of our streaming platform Joyn. I am very pleased about this new licensing cooperation, which once again allows us to show our viewers that we offer the best free on-demand content selection,” said Pabst.

The advertising sales for the newly acquired content will be handled by ProSiebenSat.1’s marketing division Seven. One Media.
