The number of Swedish households that access illegal TV services have reached a new high.
Stockholm-based consultancy Mediavision says that despite efforts to contain such services the number of people consuming them continues to grow.
As of autumn 2024, over 700,000 households in Sweden were paying for an unlicensed IPTV service, representing a significant increase compared to the spring of 2024.
A review of Sweden’s national film policy, initiated by the Swedish government in 2024, has concluded a ban on private individuals consuming illegal content could be introduced. It also concludes proposals on how such a ban might work.
“Piracy remains a significant problem, particularly when it comes to illegal IPTV, comments Natalia Borelius, senior analyst at Mediavision. Over 700,000 households in Sweden now have such a service, which is a new record high. It is good for the industry that the government has now decided to investigate how to counter this development.”
