A long running dispute between MultiChoice and channel provider eMedia has been brought to an end.
A note included in eMedia’s six-month results published this week says the two broadcasters have come to an agreement.
The disagreement began in 2022 when MultiChoice removed four eMedia channels, eExtra, eMovies, eMovies Extra, and eToonz, from its platform following a Competition Tribunal hearing.
A year later, MultiChoice sports channel SuperSport secured a subsidiary rights agreement with public broadcast SABC for the 2023 Rugby World Cup. The last-minute deal granted SuperSport the rights to broadcast 16 live matches, including all of those involving South Africa, for US$3.1 million.
“The Competition Commission’s complaint against MultiChoice South Africa by eMedia for removing eMedia’s four entertainment channels from the DStv bouquet as well as DStv’s preclusion of the Rugby World Cup matches from the Openview platform has resulted in significant legal fees for the group. The matter has, however, been satisfactorily settled by both parties in September,” read the report.
