The Culture Secretary has announced plans to review the long term funding of the BBC and seek out alternatives to the licence fee.
Lisa Nandy confirmed she would not procede with the review of the BBC’s funding model as established by the previous government, which had appointed a panel of experts. Instead the funding review would form part of the review of the BBC’s Royal Charter.
The TV licence, currently set at £169.50 a year, is payable by all households regardless of whether they consume BBC content. The number of households paying the fee has fallen in recent years amid changing viewing habits, while the BBC has been forced to make a series of cuts as increases failed to keep pace with inflation.
The government said it was committed to keeping the licence fee in its current form up to 2027 and would raise the fee in line with inflation.
