Apple considering branded TV in smart home push

November 19, 2024 14.24 Europe/London By Julian Clover

A well-worn Apple rumour has been given new legs by a Bloomberg report.

Last week, it was reported that Apple was working on a wall-mounted display that would have the ability to control smart home devices within the household. Codenamed J490 the ‘TV’ would have an iPad-like display.

Integrating with Apple’s digital assistant Siri, it would manage smart home devices including security cameras, lights and thermostats. It would also integrate with the Apple Intelligence AI functionality found in Apple’s most recent iPhones and iPads.

Several years ago, Apple toyed with the idea of creating the Apple TV set-top that launched in 2007. Three years later Apple founder Steve Jobs dismissed the product as nothing more than a hobby, but an Apple TV set has continued to hold sway inside and outside the Cupertino company.

According to Bloomberg, Jobs’ successor Tim Cook has made the product a priority as part of plans to build out Apple’s home ecosystem.
