The European Court of Justice has ruled that Vodafone’s 2018 takeover of Germany’s Unitymedia was legitimate.
The European Commission had initially expressed serious concerns over the $22 billion deal, but eventually approved the transaction, subject to market remedies that had been identified by the Commission.
However, three operators; Deutsche Telekom, Tele Columbus and NetCologne went to the courts in a matter that has only been resolved this week. The operators feared Vodafone would establish a dominant position in Germany, particularly in television distribution, and in the Czech Republic.
However, the court took the view that the objections were unfounded and dismissed the claim.
