Spain’s competition commission has begun action against Telefónica over its 2015 purchase of pay-TV operator Sogecable.
The telco had made a commitment that contracts for the exclusive acquisition of broadcasting rights in Spain for third-party sports audiovisual content could not exceed three years from the date of signing the contract.
The CNMC believes a contract for broadcasting rights for the National First Division League Championship from the 2022/2023 season could have breached this commitment.
CNMC has been monitoring the agreement, initiated as part of the conditions of the purchase of DTS-Sogecable. It first brought the matter to Telefónica’s attention in February this year.
An investigation has now been launched, which is expected to run for three months.
