Italy has begun an upgrade of its digital terrestrial platform.
Since August 28, public broadcaster RAI has been simulcasting in the DVB-T2 standard, allowing transmissions in the high definition format. DVB-T2 will ultimately replace DVB-T, though some commentators argue that it is itself facing replacement by streaming services.
Rai 1 HD, Rai 2 HD, Rai 3 HD national, Rai 4 HD, Rai News 24 HD, and Rai Premium HD will simulcast in HD and SD, while Rai Storia, Rai Scuola, and Rai Radio 2 Visual, will be available exclusively in DVB-T2.
“This strategic choice, in line with the new Rai service contract that we have recently implemented, will not only raise the quality of broadcasts but also represents a concrete commitment from the government for a technologically advanced and connected country. More innovation for our television system, more services for our citizens path, towards the Italy of the future,” said Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso.
To help viewers who may be unsure as to whether they can receive the new services, a dedicated test channel has been set up on channel 558, which is only visible on TVs and receivers that are compatible with the new standard.
