WDR streamed Euro 2024 with Insys VT and ORS Group

August 22, 2024 10.22 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

Insys Video Technologies and Austrian Broadcasting Services, ORS Group, have supported German public broadcaster WDR during the UEFA Euro 2024 championship by providing content delivery network (CDN) services and technical support.

WDR is acting on behalf of ARD, the joint organisation of the public broadcasters in Germany, of which WDR is a member. Insys VT and ORS Group secured a two-year tender to provide CDN services for an ARD Multi-CDN-Platform and real-time technical support for WDR.

WDR aimed to enhance ARD’s existing CDN solution as part of the ongoing efforts to improve broadcasting capabilities. This enhancement was crucial not only for general operations, but became especially significant during the UEFA Euro 2024, where WDR anticipated a substantial increase in the number of viewers.

Services provided by Insys VT and ORS Group were part of the ARD Multi-CDN-Platform during the Euro 2024, supporting two ARD services: Das Erste, a linear, Germany-wide TV channel, and the digital platform Sportschau.de.

The project involved a deep analysis of WDR’s requirements to tailor the solution to the broadcasters’ specific needs, extensive optimisation to ensure peak performance, and continuous technical support to guarantee reliable broadcasting operations, according to Insys VT and ORS. The implementation was carried out in cooperation with Amazon Web Services (AWS), using Amazon CloudFront CDN.

“Working on the UEFA Euro 2024 was a prime example of how cloud-based infrastructure can rise to the occasion. Thanks to the scalability of Amazon CloudFront CDN-Services, we were able to manage viewership peaks during key matches while ensuring a smooth viewing experience. This project really highlighted how cloud technology can provide reliable and scalable performance even during the most demanding events,” said Krzysztof Bartkowski, CEO of Insys Video Technologies.

Following the partnership during the UEFA Euro 2024, Insys VT and ORS Group supported the ARD Multi-CDN-Platform for the Olympics 2024, delivering seamless broadcasting experiences for another major international sporting event. This continues their involvement from last year, when Insys VT and ORS Group were chosen to deliver encoder and support services for a four-year period to several German public-broadcasting broadcasters, including WDR.

Insys VT recently achieved the AWS Media & Entertainment Competency status, highlighting expertise in advanced media solutions. The company’s AWS Service Delivery designation for Amazon CloudFront distinguishes it as an AWS Partner Network (APN) member with specialised technical proficiency and proven customer success in delivering Amazon CloudFront.

Insys VT and ORS Group will jointly head to IBC in Amsterdam this year, marking the first time both companies exhibit together at the trade show.
