Sky and CityFibre have agreed a long-term partnership that will see Sky launch broadband services on the CityFibre network.
The challenger broadband provider that entered profitability in May currently has a footprint of 3.8 million. There are plans to expand this to at least 8 million premises in the next few years.
Greg Mesch, CEO at CityFibre said: “This partnership with Sky is a huge vote of confidence in our business and has cemented CityFibre’s position as the UK’s third digital infrastructure platform. With demand for digital connectivity continuing to grow, CityFibre’s network can provide the quality and reliability that people need and the infrastructure competition the UK deserves.”
Sky currently runs services over BT’s Openreach network – it previously worked with CityFibre a decade ago in a pilot project with TalkTalk.
It is anticipated that Sky’s Full Fibre Broadband will be available to people on the CityFibre network in 2025. This will include 1.3 million homes in hard-to-reach areas through CityFibre’s extensive participation in the Government’s Project Gigabit Programme.
“Sky’s new partnership with CityFibre will mean we can provide fast, reliable and great value broadband to more homes across the UK. This will mean we are able to reach even more people with full fibre, which is essential for the modern home,” said Amber Pine, Sky’s managing director of connectivity.
CityFibre’s UK launch in 2017 was underpinned by a wholesale contract with Vodafone. Smaller ISPs have also been added to the platform as the network has expanded.
