Changes to the way the TV licence fee is implemented in Ireland could result in hotels, bars and bookmakers needing to pay an additional supplement under new proposals being considered by the cabinet.
The suggested rule change is similar to the wholesale scheme operated by platforms such as Sky for their subscription channels in the hospitality sector.
The new measures would be implemented by An Post the body that collects the fee on behalf of the government and public broadcaster RTE.
The Sunday Times, which first reported the story, said the current £160 fee did not consider how many screens are used within a household or business. The new measures would make commercial premises pay €169.50 for the first 15 screens then €169.50 for every five further screens.
The possibility of introducing a conditional access system is also under consideration.
It is understood the government has broadly welcomed the proposals that are seen as a “constructive consultation”.
