Spain’s public broadcaster has told Mediapro that it won’t be paying for coverage of top flight football next season.
TVE has rejected the proposal from the rights holder, voting by a simple majority to bring four months of negotiation to an end. El Confidencial Digital says the broadcaster was also concerned at the number of conditions that had been attached to the contract as well as a potential scheduling conflict with Friday night matches and the regular cultural space.
The package under discussion is thought to be similar to one currently broadcast by Gol TV. Among the restrictions were the exclusion of Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Atlético de Madrid and Valencia CF. Any team competing in Europe, would also be held back until they had been knocked out of the competition.
€3.8 million had been set aside for the 38 League games at roughly €100,000 per match.
