The number of employees at RTE will be reduced by 400 and production of flagship programmes The Late Late Show and Fair City moved to an independent production company under a new strategy from the public broadcaster.
The publication of published A New Direction: Statement of Strategy 2025 – 2029 follows last November’s Strategic Vision document and a public consultation.
“We are determined to build a strong, modern RTÉ that will play its role in Irish life, that Ireland will be proud of and that will deliver a better outcome for the public we serve,” said RTÉ Director General Kevin Bakhurst.
The new strategy is designed to move RTE from a traditional broadcaster to a streaming destination for Irish audiences.
A new Governance Framework will provide the RTÉ Board, management, staff and external stakeholders with a comprehensive guide to RTÉ’s governance arrangements.
It is anticipated that a new funding model will be announced by the Irish Government later this year that will lead to a generational change in public service media in Ireland.
“As is widely recognised, funding reform is critical to protecting public service media in Ireland. We will continue to need the outstanding support of our staff, our partners in the independent sector and the range of organisations we work with daily across Ireland,” said Bakhurst.
In line with the consultation more programmes will be made outside of Dublin, and more from the independent sector. Overall the organisation will become smaller, though with an increase in digital services.
