German telco Deutsche Telekom now also offers teletext on its TV platform MagentaTV.
Viewers can access the function by pressing the “OK” button on the remote control of the MagentaTV One box and selecting the teletext symbol in the following menu. The pages can then be accessed directly using the number buttons on the remote control.
According to Telekom, a technical process means that there are no loading delays with MagentaTV, so the pages appear on the screen faster than in the classic version.
The teletext function is available for more than 30 TV channels. The prerequisite for teletext access is the use of a new MagentaTV tariff on a first or second generation MagentaTV One box.
Background: Teletext is included in the TV signal on the traditional, DVB-based distribution infrastructures cable, satellite and DTT, but must be processed separately on IP-based TV platforms such as MagentaTV.
According to Telekom, more than 10 million people used the teletext function every week last year in Germany. IP and streaming providers that want to establish themselves as a fully-fledged alternative to traditional TV reception methods are therefore increasingly starting to offer teletext, most recently waipu.tv.
