Amazon’s country director for Germany has given an insight into the performance of Champions League football on Amazon Prime Video.
In the last week, the streamer has been able to screen two semi-finals, both involving German sides. Borussia Dortmund made it into the finals against PSG, while Bayern Munich lost out to Real Madrid.
While Amazon does not normally release figures for the German market, falls in audiences for other channels suggested Amazon had a winning audience.
“The Champions League, thankfully, has gotten better year after year. We also thought, when we started, that it would be frontloaded, but it has grown year after year and of course, this year we were lucky to have two German teams in the semi-finals. That was obviously a bingo, and Dortmund last week set a new record,” Dr Christoph Schneider told ANGA COM in Cologne.
“I think the technology was quite nervous if it would hold up. But the figure I can say was clearly over 4.5 million but watched together, in twos, in threes, in fours. The Bayern game before was a bit less, though it was a holiday, it was a summer barbecue evening, so my neighbours all watched it in groups of seven, eight. So, we had a bit fewer on the account number, but then you can roughly estimate how many people also watched it there.”
The final takes place on June 1.
