DTH satellite leads TV reception in Germany

May 7, 2024 10.14 Europe/London By Jörn Krieger

DTH satellite is reinforcing its position as the leading TV reception infrastructure in Germany.

With an increase to 16.53 million TV households (2022: 16.34 million), DTH satellite reception achieves a market share of 45.5% (2022: 45.0%), according to the new Astra TV Monitor 2023.

Cable TV is in second place with 15.11 million households and a market share of 41.6% (2022: 15.21 million or 41.9%). IPTV recorded a slight decline, reaching 3.49 million TV households. This corresponds to a market share of 9.6% (2022: 3.61 million or 9.9%).

The number of households with DTT reception grew slightly to 1.22 million or 3.4% (2022: 1.14 million or 3.1%). Overall, the number of TV households increased slightly in 2023 – to 36.36 million (2022: 36.30 million).

The number of HD households in Germany rose to 33.65 million in 2023 (2022: 33.52 million). This means that almost 92.5% of all TV households in Germany receive their TV channels in HD quality. DTH satellite is also the leading distribution platform for HD television with 15.41 million households reached, followed by cable TV with 13.50 million (IPTV 3.48 million, DTT 1.22 million).

The Astra TV Monitor 2023 was conducted by the market research institute Kantar on behalf of Astra satellite operator SES. The survey of a total of 6,000 households across Germany took place at the end of 2023. The evaluation focused on the reception method of the household’s main TV device, in most cases the smart TV in the living room.
