The European Commission has given approval to plans by Slovakia to compensate transmission company Towercom for the costs of releasing frequencies in the 700MHz band.
The compensation is designed to cover the costs of migrating digital terrestrial television services to new frequencies.
Under State Aid rules, Towercom will now receive €11.7 million to cover the costs of the move. The 700MHz frequencies will now be used for 5G wireless broadband services.
It follows a decision by the European Parliament and Council to pursue the release of frequencies held by DTT operators in favour of mobile broadband.
The compensation has been limited to costs related to the release of the band and any interference that would have disrupted DTT services.
